Oldonyo lengai trekking highlits
The incredible Ol Doinyo Lengai (2890 metres) is located just 240 kilometres northwest of Arusha town, along the western Great Rift Valley escarpment, with breathtaking views of Lake Natron on the border with Kenya. Ol Doinyo Lengai, or the Mountain of God in Maasai, is the only active volcano mountain in Tanzania – In a hundred years Lengai has erupted about 15 times, the last time was in 2013. Fortunately, Ol Doinyo Lengai eruptions happen without victims because the volcano has relatively small size and it is situated rather far from nearest Maasai villages.
The incredible Lake Natron, situated at the foot of the mountain, is home to the endangered lesser flamingos that live in the Great Rift Valley. It is believed to be the most important breeding site for these magnificent birds in the whole world, with an astonishing 75% of the global population living there!
