Moshi: The Coffee town

Moshi is an absolutely charming town located in the Kilimanjaro Region of northern Tanzania. Moshi is most renowned for being the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and a major draw for climbers and adventurers from around the world. The city is also the place from where most Kilimanjaro day hikes start. So no matter who you are – a nature enthusiast or a culture aficionado – Moshi is certainly the best spot to start exploring the country! Here’s an overview of Moshi:

Geography and climate:

Moshi is perfectly positioned at the southern base of the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro, offering absolutely breathtaking views of the snow-capped peak on clear days. The town is surrounded by the most incredible, lush landscapes, including coffee plantations, banana groves, and rolling hills. It enjoys a delightfully tropical climate, with warm days and cool evenings, especially during the dry season (June to October and December to February).

Backbone Economy

Moshi’s economy is built on a strong foundation of agriculture, with coffee being the primary export crop. The fertile volcanic soil around Kilimanjaro makes the region absolutely ideal for coffee farming! Tourism is a huge part of the economy thanks to the incredible Mount Kilimanjaro, the amazing nearby national parks like Arusha and Serengeti, and the fascinating cultural experiences with the Chagga people.

People and Culture

Moshi is home to the Chagga people, one of Tanzania’s largest and most welcoming ethnic groups, known for their incredible hospitality and rich traditions. The town has a fantastic, welcoming vibe, with bustling markets, cafes, and local craft shops. It is also world-famous for its incredible annual Kilimanjaro Marathon, which attracts runners from across the globe.
